The expression Direct Hair Implantation is used for direct transplantation of hair follicles. In this method, recipient sites are not created before the transplantation process contrary to classical FUE method, and grafts are transplanted with special pen-like devices called ‘Implanters’. This transplantation method does not require shaving, so it is possible to transplant grafts between thinned existing hairs.
In this way, hair transplantation can be performed without cutting the hair, so follicular grafts are transplanted to fill the bald areas between existing hairs. This method can be indicated as hair transplantation for women because it is possible to transplant hair follicles in bald areas between hairs. Of course men with similar conditions may also benefit from this hair transplantation technique.
Application of DHI Method
To better understand how the DHI method is applied, let’s briefly refer to the hair transplantation stages.
Hair transplantation consists of 3 stages; The process of collecting grafts, creating recipient sites and transplanting the hair follicles.
Unlike other methods, recipient site creation and transplanting of the grafts in the DHI technique are performed simultaneously.
The hair follicles collected in a hair transplantation operation performed with the Choi implanter pen are separated from the skin as well as the surrounding tissue and placed one by one into the pen. This placement should be done very carefully and meticulously. In this way, the most natural results are obtained from hair transplantation. After placing each hair follicle into the Choi pen, the professional assistants will then hand these follicles over to the specialist physician to carry out the transplantation process. At this stage the specialist tranplants the hair follicles at the most appropriate skin-hair angle of 40-45 degrees. Another important point apart from this implantation angle, is to transplant the grafts at the right direction of natural hair growth. After determining the proper angle and direction of hair growth, the grafts are then placed within the hollow end of the Choi needle, ready to be transplanted into the recipient sites. In each session 2 to 6 Choi pens and an average of 15-16 pointed Choi implanter tips are used. The tips of these pens are available in different sizes which are determined based on thickness, and other characteristics of patient’s hair follicles.
Choi hair transplantation method naturally has several advantages and disadvantages when compared with the FUE method. Let us first list the advantages indicated by DHI hair transplantation experts:
This method reduces the time the grafts are out of the body and ensures a healthier transplantation.
The hair follicles have a higher survival rate.
Since lesser number of incisions are made, the risk of bleeding is minimized
The presence of pre-existing hair within the recipient site does not cause any problem in the DHI technique. Therefore, in small areas where hair is not completely lost, it is possible to transplant the grafts in between the existing follicles.
After the operation, faster recovery can be seen, so the patient can return to his/her daily routine within a short time.
DHI method allows follicles to be transplanted without shaving the head .
This method enables achieving higher hair density as it allows to transplant into balding areas that are narrower
Its disadvantages relative to FUE method as follows:
Both the physician and his/her team need to undergo a very long period of training in order to become an expert .
It is generally a more costly method compared to other hair transplantation methods.
Because it is a very meticulous process, the physician should be in good physical condition, and perform DHI very carefully.
Transplanting in an area with pre-existing follicles means that this area is too narrow and if the physician does not have sufficient experience, the tips of Choi pens may damage other hair follicles while working in this restricted space. After explaining the outstanding features of this technique, we would like to touch on a final point.
Is everyone eligible for DHi / Choi Hair Transplantation?
With the first Choi pen developed, this method was only performed on people with straight and thick hair. The Choi implanter evolved over time and today can be also applied people with other hair distribution patterns. The implanter used today has a diameter ranging between of 0.64 mm and 1.0 mm.
In the light of scientific and technological developments, today hair transplantation can now be performed in a much safer way with Choi pen tips. Clinics specialized in this technique can provide highly effective, predictable and most importantly natural-looking results in hair transplantation through the utilization of Choi pens.
